About BMP to GIF Conversion

BMP lagrer ukomprimerte statiske bilder mens GIF tilbyr palettbasert komprimering for nett og eldre animasjoner.

Key Benefits

1
Webgrafikk

GIF var webstandarden før PNG for små knapper og ikoner.

2
Innebygd i e-post

GIF støttes bredt i e-postklienter.

3
Animasjon

BMP kan ikke animeres; GIF støtter bildeanimasjon.

4
Lagringsreduksjon

GIF er mye mindre enn BMP.

⚠️

Note: GIF begrenser BMPs fargeinfo til 256 farger. Mest egnet for enkel grafikk og ikoner.

File Size
BMP3 MB – 25 MB per image — a 1920×1080 24-bit BMP is approximately 5.9 MB
GIF10–200 KB for static GIFs; 0.5 MB – 20 MB for animated GIFs
Browser Support
BMPTechnically supported by most browsers but virtually never used on the web due to enormous file sizes
GIFUniversal — all browsers including IE5, all operating systems, all mobile devices, all social media platforms
Best For
BMPLegacy Windows apps
GIFAnimations, icons

Common Use Cases: BMP → GIF

🎬 Web animation creation🎨 Simple icon conversion🌐 Web-compatible graphics
⚠️BMP to GIF reduces colors to 256, causing visible banding on photographic BMPs. For photos, convert to JPG. For logos and flat-color graphics with few colors, GIF conversion works well.
BMP

About the BMP

BMP (Device-Independent Bitmap) was introduced by Microsoft with the Windows 3.0 SDK in 1990 as the native raster format for Windows. It stores pixel data with zero compression, ensuring perfect reproduction across all hardware. BMP dominated early Windows computing for wallpapers, icons, and application graphics. As the internet grew, its massive file sizes made it impractical for any networked use, displacing it with JPG, PNG, and WebP.

Strengths
+Zero compression artifacts — the highest possible fidelity for raw storage
+Simple, well-documented format trivial to read/write programmatically
+Universal support across all Windows software and development tools
+Direct pixel data access with no decoding overhead
Limitations
Extremely large files — a 1080p image is ~6 MB vs ~300 KB as JPG
No practical web use — impractically large for any internet delivery
Limited support outside Windows ecosystem
No meaningful advantages over PNG for any modern use case
When to Use
Legacy Windows applications that exclusively require BMP format
Automated Windows image processing pipelines as an intermediate format
System resource files (wallpaper, specific application bitmaps)
When absolute raw pixel fidelity is needed and file size is irrelevant
Tips
PNG achieves identical lossless quality to BMP at 50–70% smaller file sizes
Convert to JPG for a 95%+ file size reduction with visually excellent quality
24-bit BMP and 24-bit PNG are visually identical — PNG is always the better choice
There are essentially no modern use cases where BMP is preferable to PNG
GIF

About the GIF

GIF was invented by CompuServe engineer Steve Wilhite in 1987 for transmitting images over slow modem connections. Its 256-color limit reflected the monitor technology of that era. A 1990s patent dispute over LZW compression triggered the creation of PNG as a replacement, but GIF survived due to its unique animation capability. GIF animations experienced a massive cultural resurgence in the 2010s as the dominant format for social media reaction clips.

Strengths
+Universal support on every device and platform ever made
+Animation support with per-frame timing and seamless looping
+Excellent LZW compression for images with large areas of solid color
+Binary transparency works cleanly for logos on solid backgrounds
Limitations
Hard 256-color limit causes visible banding and dithering on photographs
Binary transparency only — no anti-aliased edges on variable backgrounds
Animated GIFs are very large compared to animated WebP or MP4 video
Color quantization permanently destroys photographic color quality
When to Use
Simple animations requiring universal cross-platform compatibility
Icons and logos using 16 or fewer distinct solid colors
Reaction GIFs and memes where universal sharing compatibility is essential
Pixel art and intentionally retro-styled graphics
Tips
Reduce to the minimum color palette needed — every extra color increases file size
For modern web animations, use animated WebP or a short MP4 video instead of GIF
Static GIFs should always be converted to PNG for better quality at smaller file sizes
Dithering can improve photographic GIF quality but significantly increases file size
